MAKOplasty® Knee

The MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing procedure offers several advantages over "total knee replacement" surgery in which the natural joint is wholly removed and replaced. Unlike total knee replacement, MAKOplasty resurfaces only the diseased portion of the knee, saving healthy bone, reducing blood loss, minimizing hospitalization and reducing recovery time.

Who Qualifies  The knee joint contains three compartmental surfaces. They are the medial, patellofemoral and lateral compartments. Early stage osteoarthritis typically begins on the inside (medial compartment) but may also begin on the outside (lateral compartment). Untreated, osteoarthritis may progress into a second compartment, which is considered mid-stage.

The MAKOplasty procedure is only indicated for patients suffering from unicompartmental or bicompartmental knee disease. If the disease has spread to all three compartments, MAKOplasty is no longer a viable option.

During surgery, your surgeon may find that all three compartments are diseased and total knee arthroplasty is sometimes necessary. Total knee arthoplasty is considered the gold standard for treating advanced stage osteoarthritis. It is proven highly effective, with 90% of procedures providing service out to 15 years. However, it is highly invasive and requires extensive rehabilitation. A Duke University study survey reports 88-92% of women and men respectively decline total arthroplasty when offered. For this reason, most patients will find it preferable to get early- or mid-stage treatment when the MAKO procedure is still an option.

If you suffer from one of the following, MAKOplasty® may be the answer for you:
  • Knee pain with activity, usually on the inner knee and/or under the knee cap, or the outer knee
  • Start-up knee pain or stiffness when activities are initiated from a sitting position
  • Failure to respond to non-surgical treatments or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication
